Echoing Heartbreak
Lucy’s voice was shaking as she hovered close. “How on earth did she make it through this?” With anger and sadness entangled in a tight knot in her chest, Becky was unable to answer. Every small puppy was evidence of the hardships the poor dog had faced. She realized they needed to move fast to save as many of them as possible as she took in the scene in front of her. Her determination solidified into resolve.

Becky realized they were running out of time when the mother dog let forth a low whine. “We need everything we have right now, including heat lamps and fluids!” Her words were sharpened by desperation as she yelled. The dog was struggling to stay with them, barely hanging on. Encouraged by the dog’s feeble howls, everyone hastened to comply, and the room was a flurry of activity. As Becky attempted to concentrate, her heart hammered in her ears.
