Becky pulled out another little figure, her fingers shaking as she pressed again. Her hands were marred by tears, perspiration, and strain, all of which combined to create a desperate mixture. The slight beating beneath her fingertips was nearly muffled for a time by the sound of her own heartbeat. She grit her teeth and pulled harder, determined not to give up on these fragile lives. “Come on, little one,” she said in a kind voice.

Becky was so exhausted that she almost passed out when she finally succeeded in removing the final puppy. Twitching and struggling for air, twelve little bodies were stretched out on towels. Her heart hurt because they were all so little and fragile. Breathless, she slumped backward, holding on to the shaky hope. This was where they were. “That’s it, we got you,” she said, wiping a wet lock of hair away from her eyes.
