“Hold the suction!” Becky let out a yelp as her sense of urgency increased. Deeper this time, another mass moved. Becky’s resolve was shaken as the terrier let out a guttural, frantic wail that reverberated around the tiny space. The sound made her heart hurt, but she forced herself to keep going because she knew she couldn’t give up now. The room was filled with a mixture of terror and resolve. They were on the verge of learning the truth, and every second mattered.

Becky’s hands moved swiftly, creating the first little, slick shape. It was a puppy, but emaciated and tragically little, barely hanging on. Lucy glanced at the frail creature and muttered, “Oh, God,” with a trembling in her voice. Becky swallowed hard and remained focused. Every life was on the line, and it was only the first of many that she dreaded. Action was required; indecision was not an option.
