Lucy turned away and pressed her forehead against the wall, her face becoming pale as she clamped her hands over her lips. Tension was high in the air. Something inside the terrier moved with an odd twitch beneath Becky’s gloved palms. The chamber resonated with a collective gasp. Becky sensed the eerie movement and realized they were in danger of being discovered. Every second was a mixture of fear and resolve.

Becky prayed for luck as she reached further, her heart thumping in her chest. “Come on, come on,” she said to herself as she frantically searched with her fingertips. Her fingertips were touched by something slippery and writhing. It was alive, just barely surviving. She became aware of how sensitive the issue was, and her breath caught. Becky’s thoughts were racing, praying that whatever she was going to do wouldn’t be the worst.
