Her fingertips felt the pressure of another little body, and then another. “This isn’t normal,” Becky whispered, shakily exhaling as she felt perspiration running down her back. The urgency made her hands move constantly. Every eye in the room was riveted to the scene as it developed, and the atmosphere was charged with suspense. Every fresh small shape served as an agonizing reminder of the dire circumstances they were in.

Smaller and weaker than the last, puppy after puppy came out. Lucy scrubbed them all down with diligence. She said, almost to herself, “God, there are so many.” Becky was motivated to do everything she could since she felt the weight of every life in her hands.
