Surviving Seven
Seven puppies had made it out alive, huddled around their mother’s mended and bruised body. Feeling a strange mixture of pride and grief, Becky kept watch over them. Lucy sat close by, her eyes empty and her hands shaking as she drank coffee. The weight of everything hung in the air, even though the room was suddenly quiet. Every little breath served as a reminder of the fight they had waged and the lives they had lost.

Lucy’s voice was heavy with fatigue as she glanced at Becky. Do we need to report it? She said, the question weighing heavily on the little space. “Definitely,” Becky snarled, a new wave of rage blossoming in her chest. They would give these puppies all they had, but it wouldn’t be enough. She vowed, her face tightening with resolve, “We’ll make sure they pay for this.” She wasn’t going to back down, and the battle wasn’t finished.
