Mark spoke to Lisa in a whisper, the words sliding between them like a code. Lisa turned to face me, her face displaying her inner agony while still attempting to smile. She murmured clumsily, “Thanks for everything,” her eyes fleeing away. She continued, “We’ll work things out,” and then they both hurried out of the room, leaving me feeling uncertain and confused. A Silent Departure

A weird uneasiness crept into the now-quiet room as I watched them go. My lips still tasted bitter from their hasty departure with the infant. There was obviously a problem, and I didn’t know how to help or even comprehend it. I had questions, but I didn’t think there would be any answers. I felt as like I was missing a vital piece of the puzzle as I sat there by myself with my thoughts and the lingering smell of antiseptic. Where would I discover the clarity I needed?
