I was unable to keep all of these insights to myself back home. Naturally, I gave Jane another call. I told her all the strange things that happened during my visit, and she paid close attention. She seemed to get more interested with every syllable. Jane had a talent for noticing details that I may miss, and talking to her about my worries made me feel less stressed. I felt a bit less alone in solving this puzzle with every syllable.

Jane gave me a possible explanation after I had told her everything. “Maybe the baby reminds Lisa of something she just can’t accept,” she said. Her theory made sense in a way that I hadn’t before thought of. It might have been more about what the baby stood for or could change than it was about the infant itself. It was a fresh approach to the whirling thoughts surrounding the matter, and I should have given it more thought.
