Awkward Silence
The living room fell silent after Lisa’s grudging explanation. The room felt much more cramped than it already was because of the overwhelming silence. I sat there looking around nervously, not sure what to say next. Mark and Lisa simply exchanged quick, uncomfortable glances, as though they were discussing something with me in private. There was a noticeable tension between us, an imperceptible wall that felt difficult to overcome.

Offering To Help
“Is there anything I can do to help?” I finally said, trying to defuse the situation, and my voice seemed to reverberate a little in the still room. Mark and Lisa shook their heads rapidly, nearly simultaneously. They appeared to have practiced synchronization, as though they were ready for this particular query. “No, really, we’re fine,” Lisa emphasized. Her eyes, however, conveyed a different message, suggesting something they weren’t yet prepared to discuss.
