A letter in the mail
Sarah saw something on the side table one evening after the children had settled down for the day’s activities. She noticed a letter with her name written on it, clearly visible in her sister’s handwriting. Her heart skipped a beat for a time. ‘Mom, what’s that? Lily looked up from her schoolwork and inquired. “Just mail,” Sarah said, pushing aside any inquiries that could have arisen. Her voice was firm as she tried to hide her astonishment.

She had a flash of anger and incredulity, which caused her to make a snap choice. “What did it say?” Jake asked, but Sarah simply shrugged and ripped up the slip, throwing the pieces in the garbage mindlessly.
