The silent reply
Sarah, the phone still at her ear, sighed and stroked her temple. She managed to say, “I have nothing to say to you,” in a firm voice. There was stillness between them as her sister’s stern remarks reverberated. The children in the room were abnormally silent, their eyes wide as they watched her. Everything seemed to stop for a second, as if the house itself was holding its breath alongside them.

Disconnecting the past
Sarah immediately hung up, her fingers shaking a little from the strain. The weight of unspoken words weighed on her as she put down the phone. Sarah tried to concentrate on whatever was to be done next as she gave a small shake of her head.
