Birthday surprise
Sarah barely realized it was her birthday when she woke up. She was lying in bed when the morning light came through the blinds. Quiet laughter and sudden murmuring sounded from the corridor. Abruptly, the door sprang open, and the children strode in carrying a tray. “Happy birthday!” they sang, placing the tray on her lap. As she marveled at the thoughtfully prepared brunch, a tearful Sarah laughed.

Sarah’s heart grew warm as she gazed at the children. There was a lot of conversation and laughter in the kitchen. Sarah was led to the table by Lily, who proudly declared, “We made you a cake.” The cake was lovely in its apparent affection, despite being a little off-center. Sarah remarked, beaming broadly, “It’s perfect.” The excitement of the day was increased by the fact that each card and hug she got that morning seemed like tiny gems.
