While movie scripts may be polished and accurate, allowing actors to go off-script can create more impeccable and hilarious scenes. This article is about some of the memorable movie moments where stars improvised. It may surprise you to learn that some lines in our favorite movies were actually never part of the original script!
Goodfellas
To be honest, apart from The Godfather, the other great classic gangster film is definitely Goodfellas. There were plenty of legends in this film including Roberto De Niro, Lorraine Bracco, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. The most underrated was definitely Pesci as Tommy. He actually invented the famous line, “Do I amuse you?”

Goodfellas
The Fugitive
Let’s begin with The Fugitive which starred both Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison Ford. During the shoot, Ford’s character was being pursued for a murder he didn’t commit. He was escaping from the authorities and at a standstill with Jones’ character, Ford screamed that he was not responsible for his wife’s murder. Jones forgot his original line and instead of saying “I don’t care,” he said, “That isn’t my problem.”

The Fugitive
A Few Good Men
The film A Few Good Men has more than one amazing unscripted moments! With stars like Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, and Jack Nicholson, one could expect nothing less than a stellar film. One line that caught our attention was from Jack Nicholson. “You can’t handle the truth!” he says. It was completely unscripted, but look at how famous the line is now.

A Few Good Men
Deliverance
In Deliverance, Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and Ned Beatty get attacked by hillbillies while vacationing in Georgia. Do you also remember when Sally Fields and Burt Reynolds were dating? Man, how time flies! That aside, the most unforgettable scene was when they were surrounded by the wild hicks and Bobby was ordered to “squeal like a pig.” To the surprise of many, Ned Beatty actually obeys. It was not in the script, but a lot of cast members try to take credit for the scene.

Deliverance
Being John Malkovich
Sure, it was not surprising for this off-beat film to have random moments. When shooting the scene, one of the extras was intoxicated and threw a can directly at John Malkovich’s head! He even yelled, “Hey, Malkovich! Think fast!” Seeing how things unfolded, the director loved the improvisation and decided to keep it.

Being John Malkovich
The Usual Suspects
Unlike other directors who let actors freely improvise, The Usual Suspects director Brian Singer prefers sticking to the script. All the same, he allowed actors to go off script in this iconic scene. Apparently, someone was farting repeatedly while the main characters were being held in a line-up and no one could keep a straight face. The other amazing part was when the police officer asked actor Benicio to say the line, “in English please.”

The Usual Suspects
The Silence of the Lambs
It is hard to forget the chilling performance of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecture in The Silence of the Lambs. One of his greatest improvised moments was when he was rehearsing with Jodie Foster’s character and joked about eating human liver with ‘fava beans and a nice Chianti.’ While shooting, he finishes with an incredibly disturbing hissing sound. The director decided to keep it for shock value!

The Silence Of The Lambs
Taxi Driver
The famous “You talkin’ to me?” was improvised by Robert De Niro who played Travis Bickle. While the original script by Paul Schrader stated that Travis should talk to himself in the mirror, he came up with this line on his own! What a legend!

Taxi Driver
The Warriors
Now, it is not hard to admit that watching David Patrick Kelly as Luther was a highlight for The Warriors. One of his most famous lines in the movie was, “Warriors, come out to play!” He invented this line while trying to claw three bottles in his hand through the set. Pleased with the line, the director decided to keep it.

The Warriors
Apocalypse Now
Marlon Brando may be a superb actor but he has a reputation of going off-script. He is also famously known for adopting character traits in his real life. One of the memorable examples of him going off-script was during a scene in Apocalypse Now. While rehearsing for his role of Colonel, Brando was being difficult to work with and even refused to learn the lines in the script. In fact, he jokingly used the script as a paper hat and by the time the film was over, he had improvised Colonel’s dialogue for a total of 18 minutes.

Apocalypse Now
Blade Runner
This scene in the Blade Runner is considered to be one of the most moving scenes in history. This film stars Harrison Ford but the moment was largely improvised by Rutger Hauer. Unlike most actors who stick to the script, Rutger Hauer deviated from it. Ever heard of the ‘tears in rain’ monologue? It was completely improvised by Rutger Hauer.

Blade Runner
Jaws
Naturally, there is much to celebrate in this critically-acclaimed film Jaws by Steven Spielberg. However, our focus is on Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) who completely went off-script with the line, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Jaws
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Once again, Harrison Ford makes our list. However, we are not going to talk about his happy marriage to Calista FlockHart— let’s focus on his acting in Raiders of The Lost Ark. Remember the iconic fight scene? Well, the scene originally involved intense fight choreography where Indy runs into a bad guy with a large sword. However, due to his stomach illness few days before the shoot, Ford asked Spielberg to tone it down. He simply used his revolver to put the man down and this was nothing short of memorable!

Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
Director of the Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Mel Stuart choose Wilder for the role of Willy Wonka even before Wilder had read the script. Gene Wilder accepted the role with the condition that he could change his character’s entrance. In the film, Willy limps to the entrance with a cane and then does a beautiful forward somersault. Wilder explains that he wanted the audience to distrust his character from the very beginning.

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
RoboCop
Kurtwood Smith told the director Paul about a line he came up with. The director loved it and purposely neglected to inform other cast members in order to capture their reactions. This happened when Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) was taken to the police station after being bitten by Robocop. It is here that Boddicker spits at the paperwork and yells, “Give me my f***in’ phone call.” The look of shock on everyone’s faces reflected how bewildered they were in real life.

RoboCop
A Clockwork Orange
At times, even directors face challenges when filming and things do not go as swiftly as expected. This was no different for Stanley Kubrick in the film A Clockwork Orange. In the particular scene, Alex (Malcolm McDowell) and his other friends attacked a woman in her home. Filming this rape scene proved to be difficult and a frustrated Kubrick ended up telling McDowell, “Just do whatever you want.” That is when Malcolm added a little dance and did the famous “Singing in the Rain” bit!

A Clockwork Orange
Forrest Gump
With so many memorable moments in this classic movie, it can be difficult to know which scenes were really improvised as well as the scripted ones. One improvised moment was when Forrest Gump and Bubba meet. Tom Hanks introduces the character this way: “My name is Forrest Gump. People call me Forrest Gump.” Director Robert Zemeckis thought this was a stroke of genius and kept it in the film.

Forrest Gump
Game Of Thrones
Do you know what’s really cool? The season finale of Game of Thrones! Do you know what’s really not cool? Watching season four and noticing that a Starbucks coffee cup was left in one of the shots. The truth is that it was dark in there, so it could have happened to anyone. Was this a publicity stunt? Some people think so, but the director was not having any of it. His claim is that it was an honest, albeit silly mistake.

Game Of Thrones
The Jazz Singer
The Jazz Singer is still regarded as one of the best films ever made. That’s quite a statement for any film, but especially for one over 90 years old! Did you know that actor Al Holson is responsible for the film’s most legendary line? He was the mastermind behind the “wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain’t heard nothin’ yet!” line…classic!

The Jazz Singer
Saving Private Ryan
Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan will always have a spot on lists of the best World War II films. When shooting the film, Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) talks to Private Ryan (Matt Damon). During their conversation about the things they left behind, Matt Damon invented the story about seeing his brother making out with a girl. Amazing!

Saving Private Ryan
This is Spinal Tap
This is one of the funniest films of all time. Shockingly, most of the stuff in This is Spinal Tap was invented by the cast members! So even the line, “It’s such a fine line between stupid and clever,” was actually improvised.

This Is Spinal Tap
The Shining
The Shining is another one of Kubrick’s classic films. Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance who works as winter caretaker in a hotel. However, the most memorable part was when Jack tries to get to his wife and son when the pair locked themselves in the room. Jack began chopping the door with an ax and then peered in the small hotel bathroom hole before screaming, “Here’s Jonny!” Jack admits to borrowing the improvised line from The Tonight Show with Jonny Carson.

The Shining
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
In Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, we see Han and Leia saying goodbye to each other. The princess even told him, “I love you.” However, the director Irvin felt that something was missing and asked Ford to reply how he felt. Ford also thought that his character’s response was not authentic and opted to reply, “I know.”

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Young Frankenstein
Yet again, we have Gene Wilder in the hysterical movie Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks. No, we are not going to talk about Gene this time. Let’s take a look at his co-star Marty Feldman in the role of Igor. Luckily enough, Mel allowed Feldman and other actors in the film to improvise. This is when Marty came up with the line, “What hump?” This was a great addition to the scene and Brooks decided to keep it in the final cut!

Young Frankenstein
Dumb and Dumber
Naturally, we loved watching Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) in Dumb and Dumber. It is hard to forget the part where the two play tag while driving to Aspen, annoying the hitchhiker they picked up. Apparently, Carrey went off-script when he made ‘the most annoying sound in the world’!

Dumb And Dumber
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
There is no denying that The Lord of the Rings tops almost every movie franchise that has ever existed. In The Fellowship of the Ring, we see Aragorn grieving for his friends Merry and Pippin. This is when he kicks a helmet out of frustration just before letting out an authentic roar. This is because Aragorn actually broke his toe with the stunt. Ouch.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
In this movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, we see the boys taking a joy ride in the enchanted car. This results to Molly and Arthur Weasley arguing about how to discipline them. One of the improvised lines that made it to the final cut came from Mark Williams. It was the question, “What exactly is the function of a rubber duck?”

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
Ghostbusters
Rick Moranis, who began his career at the popular improve group, made up a lot of lines for his role in Ghostbuster which was directed by Ivan Reitman. The director told Rolling Stone that Rick was a natural since he came up with a lot of ideas, including the speech at the party. “Rick just made all of it up as he was doing it,” he remarked.

Ghostbusters
Caddyshack
Leaving SNL was not the end of acting for Bill Murray. The star featured in hit movies like the Caddyshack, where will be forever remembered for the amazing speech about the Dalai Lama. The entire scene, together with the Cinderella story, was invented by Murray on the spot! In the Cinderella story, the script read “Carl cuts off the top of the flowers with a grass whip.” However, Murray said, “Get me some flowers.”

Caddyshack
Knocked Up
Remember Seth Rogen from Freaks and Geeks? Well, this star began to gain popularity after his appearance in Knocked Up where he played alongside Katherine Heigl. Just like most directors, Judd Apatow allowed the cast to improvise their lines and this is what made the movie so hilarious. One of these parts referencing Munich was completely off the cuff.

Knocked Up
Aliens
Sigourney Weaver is back for the second installment of the movie, this time with Bill Paxton joining the cast. What earned the movie a spot on the list? It would be Hudson’s unscripted line: “Game over, man.”

Aliens
Tootsie
With both Bill Murray and Dustin Hoffman starring in this film, it was almost certainly going to be a hit. As seen above, Murray has a reputation for improvisation and because of this, the director Sydney Pollack allowed him to invent a speech for the party. It was a surprise to his fellow cast members, but the monologue was actually great.

Tootsie
The Third Man
Another legend in the industry who belongs to the list would be Orson Welles. In the film The Third Man, he improvised “In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed. They produced Michelangelo, Leonardo and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace. And what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.” Wow!

The Third Man
The Devil Wears Prada
Meryl Streep was incredible in her portrayal of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. She was able to really understand the character and even invented her own lines. Remember the line, “Everyone wants to be us”? Well, it was Meryl herself who came up with it.

The Devil Wears Prada
The Godfather
The Godfather is easily the top gangster film of all time. An underrated scene in this epic film is right when Paulie dies. During this moment, Richard Castellano decides to invent his own line, “Take the cannoli.”

The Godfather
Casablanca
Another epic classic movie on our list is Casablanca. When you think of this movie, you probably remember the line, “Here’s looking at you, kid.” It was invented by Humphrey Bogart but he only said it to Ingrid Bergman whenever they played poker on set! The writers heard him say it and decided to put it in the script.

Casablanca
Full Metal Jacket
Once again, Stanley Kubrick wrote the screenplay for the legendary film Full Metal Jacket. During filming, things took a different turn when R. Lee Ermey who played as the drill sergeant improvised about half of his lines. From the beginning, Stanley knew that Ermey was perfect for the role— he was a drill instructor in real life, after all.

Full Metal Jacket
for
Titanic
It’s hard to forget this impeccable James Cameron hit which featured Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet together. An intense scene in this film was when Leo drew a nude Rose close. He must have been nervous because that was actually the first scene they filmed! According to the original script, Leo was supposed to tell Kate to lie on the couch. While the cameras were rolling, he mistakenly said, “Go lie on the bed… I mean the couch.”

Titanic
Lost In Translation
Well, fans had to wait a while before Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson finally kissed in the movie Lost in Translation. Most fans probably do not know that it was improvised! The characters were only supposed to embrace each other. It all began when Bill whispered into Scarlett’s ear and the two actors knew that the scene called for a kiss. No one knows what Bill whispered in her ear and they have decided to honor the film by keeping it a secret.

Lost In Translation
40 Year Old Virgin
There are plenty of favorite moments when it comes to the hilarious 40 Year Old Virgin. Since a lot of the cast members dabbled in professional improvisation, it was not hard for them to invent their own lines when filming. Do you want a specific example? Look no further than the scene when Steve Carell’s whole chest was waxed. Both the wax and the pain were real!

40 Year Old Virgin
Thor: The Dark World
You may remember Thor and his adorable entrance in the movie Thor: The Dark World. This genius moment takes place when he hangs his hammer on the coat hook! Even though it was unscripted, the director Alan Taylor thought it was a perfect fit for the character and decided to reshoot the entrance.

Thor: The Dark World
Clueless
When talking about classic movies, we cannot forget this 90’s movie that featured legends like Paul Rudd, Alicia Silverstone, and Donald Faison. A scene that lingers in our mind more is the part where Silverstone who played Cher goes to the valley party and runs into Murray (Faison) as he shaves his head. Faison went when off-script when he said, “I’m just keepin’ it real.”

Clueless
Bridesmaids
When one thinks about the movie Bridesmaid, the dress pooping scene comes to mind. With actors like Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, and Kristen Wiig, the movie is certainly the height of comedy. Do you remember how Maya Rudolph dropped to the ground and relieved herself in the middle of the street? It wasn’t part of the screenplay!

Bridesmaids
Pretty Woman
There is no doubt that Julia Roberts became a star after playing alongside Richard Gere in Pretty Woman. One of the most famous scenes was when Edward gives Vivian an expensive diamond necklace. When Vivian reaches out to touch the precious jewels, Gere closes the box and Roberts cracks up. It happened off the cuff, but the directors decided to keep it.

Pretty Woman
American Beauty
Sam Mendes the director of American Beauty found it better to allow the actors to make up their lines when shooting. This resulted in the unscripted dinner scene which was nothing short of amazing. Believe or not, the throwing of plates and the shocked reactions were truly authentic.

American Beauty
Reservoir Dogs
Directed by Quentin Tarantino, Reservoir Dogs had some pretty graphic scenes. It all begins when Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) is torturing a police officer Nash (Kirk Baltz). With his face cut and his mouth tied by a duct tape, the thief cuts the officer’s ear with a razor. He then breaks into a dance and says to the ear, “Hey, what’s going on? You hear that?” You’re right if you guessed that none of it was in the script.

Reservoir Dogs
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Naturally, one can expect iconic moments from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It’s the last installment in the epic franchise, after all. We also have to thank talented actors like Ralph Fiennes who portrayed the evil Lord Voldemort. During filming, Ralph kept changing his speech with the aim of getting honest responses from the cast members!

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows
The Terminator
In the movie The Terminator, James Cameron included an unscripted line from Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yes, we’re talking about the ever-popular “I’ll be back” line! Cameron loved the quote. We daresay that the movie would not be as iconic without it.

Terminator
Citizen Kane
This movie had a great impact on the film industry. Not only was it directed and written by Orson Welles, he also starred in it! With so much to handle, it was only natural that Citizen Kane would have some improvised moments. During the opening of the movie, Welles said “Rosebud” instead of “No, my sled…’’ That’s probably one of the most iconic flubs in movie history.

Citizen Kane
The Wizard Of Oz
This unscripted line invented by Judy Garland came as a blessing for the film. Otherwise, there would be no The Wizard of Oz or Wicked! During the shoot, Garland ended up saying, “I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” It is this line that changed the entire film and initiated the construction of the magical Land of Oz. It also changed the name of the movie, which was previously called After the Tornado. “Before that, everyone understood that it was set in Kansas– certainly a very strange part of Kansas, but Kansas nevertheless,” co-star Ber Lahr explained.

The Wizard Of Oz
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Remember Johnny Deep who played Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest? Well, in order to take up this role, he was required to improvise certain bits. In fact, there is a scene where we see Sparrow singing, “I got a jar of dirt.” Depp came up with this on the spot, taking Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley by surprise!

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Jim Carrey is definitely the best actor for Count Olaf. He was able to understand his character really well and it shows in his improvised lines. “Wait! Let me do that one more time! Give me the line again. Quickly, while it’s fresh in my mind!” was actually all Carrey. This unplanned dialogue was not in the script, but it worked well for the film.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Inglorious Basterds
Does Inglourious Basterds remind you of Brad Pitt’s accent? Well, try to forget about it for now. Our focus is on the scene where Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) chokes Bridget (Diane Kruger). It might have been in the script, but did you know that the hands strangling Krueger were those of the director Quentin Tarantino? He decided to take the matter into his own hands and actually proceeded to asphyxiate the actress. While she gave her consent, it must have been a truly terrifying moment.

InglouriousBasterds
Zoolander
J. P Prewitt, played by David Duchovny, plays a model who explains why male models would be great assassins. After the long explanation, Zoolander asks, “Why male models?” This prompted Duchovny to respond, “Are you kidding?” Ben Stiller simply forgot his line and messed up, but it was Duchovny’s quick thinking that saved the take. This turned into one of the funniest parts of the film and it was perfect for Zoolander’s personality!

Zoolander
When Harry Met Sally
The director behind the movie When Harry Met Sally, Rob Reiner, admits that he loves the improvised line in this movie. You might be surprised to hear that the line, “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible,” was improvised on the spot.

When Harry Met Sally
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Throughout the movie, we see Henry Jones (Sean Connery) convincing his son that Elsa was a spy. When he finally knows the truth, Indy asks his father how he found out. This is when Sean said, “She talks in her sleep.” It was not in the script, but it was perfect for the character.

Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade
The Incredible Hulk
The bar scene in The Incredible Hulk was meant to be completely silent. Yes, that means Downey improvised the famous line, “I hear you have an unusual problem. What if I told you we were putting a team together…”

The Incredible Hulk
Shaun of the Dead
Most of the parts in Shaun of the Dead were improvised by the cast members. One particular moment was when Ed (Nick Frost) consoles his friend Shaun (Simon Pegg). The former tries to cheer up the latter by telling stories about the customers he sees on a regular basis. While the script said that they will meet at a pub, they made all of the lines up!

Shaun Of The Dead
Good Morning Vietnam
Once again, we have the comedic genius Robin Williams. He plays the role of the radio host in Good Morning Vietnam. When doing the radio broadcast, what most people don’t know is that Robin invented them on the spot! He is also a true legend for the unforgettable, “Goooood morning Vietnam! Hello campers, remember Monday is Malaria day! That’s right, time to take that big orange pill.”

Good Morning Vietnam
Crazy Stupid Love
Remember the scene when Jacob (Ryan Gosling) does the Dirty Dancing lift with Hanna (Emma Stone)? Well, the entire scene was not even meant to be in the movie! Luckily, the two actors were very spontaneous. When asked where the dancing came from, Gosling said that he always wanted to try doing the Dirty Dancing lift.

Crazy Stupid Love
50/50
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was very committed to his role in 50/50. His character had cancer and the actor even decided to shave his hair on his own accord. According to his co-star Seth Rogen, the script did not include the moment but they came up with it on the spot. No wonder Rogen’s reaction in the movie seemed authentic!

50/50
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Borat was actually largely improvised, but we bet you already had an inkling that this was the case. In this film, Sacha Baron Cohen has a chat with feminists and he even claims that every woman has ‘brain the size of squirrel.’ Yeah, that wasn’t in the script at all.

Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan
The Departed
Another unscripted moment was created by Jack Nicholson in the movie The Departed. While his character and Leonardo DiCaprio’s were engaged in a chat, he suddenly directs the gun right at Leonardo DiCaprio’s face! The latter was shocked because he knew this wasn’t in the script!

The Departed
Wonder Woman
Next up is Wonder Woman. During the boat scene, Gal Gadot and Chris Pine had to make up a lot of their lines. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chris praised Gadot’s performance. He said, “She’s delivering lines like, ‘My father is Zeus’ — that is just so ridiculous. And she has to say it with a straight face, with a certain amount of innocence and earnestness. I get to react like any human being would to hearing something as ridiculous as that. So I had it easy.”

Wonder Woman
Mars Attacks!
This film had an incredibly talented cast: Natalie Portman, Jack Nicholson, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Pierce Brosnan were just some of the actors in the film. However, let us focus on Frank Welker who came up with the line, “Ack! Ack! Ack!” This barking was nowhere in the script, but the movie has since become inseparable from it.

Mars Attacks!
Tarzan The Ape Man
Who doesn’t remember the beloved classic, Tarzan? The movie most of us think of is the 1999 animated Walt Disney version. Little did we know, the original Tarzan movie is from the year 1932! Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O’Sullivan were the stars of the show, playing the famous Tarzan and Jane. Did you know that Tarzan’s signature ape sound/yell was invented by Johnny? The actor was impressively a great yodeler, so he used his skills for the sound…how cool!

Tarzan The Ape Man
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
We all need a vacation once in awhile…the terminator sure did in this scene! Arnold Schwarzenegger came up with the famous line, “I need a vacation” in the film, Terminator 2. He definitely looked, and we guess, felt, like he needed a beach day too!

Terminator 2 Judgement Day
Django Unchained
Oh, how we love Quentin Tarantino…the man never fails to create legendary films. This particular phenomenon had a stellar cast as well, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington and Christoph Waltz. Remember the scene with Leo and his bloody hand? Little did we know…he actually cut himself by accident! The scene continued and he didn’t miss a beat.

Django Unchained
Inception
Next is the scene in Inception involving an exchange between Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. While filming, Eames pulls out a large gun and tells his companion, “You mustn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.” The original script did not have the pet name tacked onto it, but everyone loved it. It was the right choice and it has since become one of the movie’s most popular lines!

Inception
The Dark Knight, Again
Who doesn’t love this movie? Heath Ledger and his portrayal of the Joker in the Dark Knight is some of the best acting we’ve ever seen. Instead of climbing on the bus at the hospital, and it later blowing up, we see Heath happily strolling toward the bus, untouched. Oh, how this scene completely changed what was to come.

The Dark Knight, Again
Anchorman
Will Ferrell’s “I’m in a glass case of emotion” was the perfect line for the situation he was in! This guy sure is talented. This quote was even donned” The 30 Funniest Movies of All Time”.

Anchorman
This Is 40
Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann in a movie together? Pure genius. The powerhouse duo took their roles as a married couple with kids to the next level. Paul may have gotten a bit too into his character. He actually farted during a scene while laying in bed next to Leslie…let’s say she was less than thrilled! Be careful what you eat the day of filming next time, Paul!

This Is 40
Guardians Of the Galaxy
Oh Chris Pratt…ladies (and gents), are you with me? Not only is he super easy on the eyes, he’s also super funny. Did you know that the hand gestures he did during the film were all him? The directors loved it so much that they decided to feature it in the trailer…way to go Chris!

Guardians Of The Galaxy
Foxcatcher
Channing Tatum played Mark Schultz in the film and he ended up creating a powerful portrayal of a mental breakdown. Tatum went off script and started beating himself up— he even broke a mirror with his head in the process. Ouch! Nonetheless, the director liked it and saw it fit to include in the movie!

Foxcatcher
The Avengers
Robert Downey Dr. must really like shawarma! He and fellow Marvel heroes go for some tasty sandwiches after saving the world only because he improvised and said “what’s next…shawarma”? I’m sure his co-stars were delighted for the impromptu.

The Avengers
The Godfather, Again
Would you believe that the Godfather stroking a cat wasn’t in the script? Seems crazy right? It’s true! A stray cat wandered onto set and Marlon Brando thought it would be a funny twist to his character, not realizing how genius and lasting his decision would be!

The Godfather Again
Superbad
Did you know that Seth Rogen and Bill Hader, who played two cops in the film, made up their entire conversation when they had McLovin in the back of the squad car? The two started talking about nonsense for over four minutes…1 minute of their spiel made it to the film!

Superbad
Home Alone
Everyone’s Christmas favorite…Home Alone! Little Kevin, aka Macaulay Culkin is quite the prankster in the 1990 film, always causing mayhem for his family and friends. This kid was quite the ad-libber! He was the one responsible for the line “you guys gonna give up, or are you thirsty for more?”

Home Alone
Avengers Infinity War
Can you believe a director would allow an actor to improvise a character’s final words? Sure does take faith. “I don’t want to go” was what Tom Holland came up with…audiences were moved and shocked by his performance!

Avengers Infinity War
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
After a scene where he was teaching, Ben Stein was quoted saying “when I finished the scene, everyone on the set was gathered around and started applauding. I thought they were applauding because they’d learned something about economics. I later learned they were applauding because it was so boring.” That’s some pretty good acting right there!

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Fast & Furious 6
Remember when Dwayne Johnson made a joke about Tyrese? Ludacris was interviewed about the scene and said, “we do a lot of different takes and a lot of our ideas make it into the movie. At the end of Fast Six when I spit out my drink and laugh at The Rock’s comments to Tyrese, I’d whispered to him to joke on Tyrese.”

Fast Furious 6
Like Crazy
Can you believe that pretty much the entire film was unscripted? Everything was based off of director Drake Doremus’ experiences in a long distance relationship. Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones are the main characters who do most of the ad-libbing…we’re impressed!

Like Crazy
Humpday
In one of the famous scenes, Mark Duplass and Lynn Shelton are in bed together (not pictured). They half-halfheartedly attempt to make love, when they both admit that they’re too tired to do anything but sleep…totally unscripted!

Humpday
Good Will Hunting
Good Will Hunting was a classic featuring the beloved Robin Williams and Matt Damon. It told the story of a janitor who would later be revealed to be a genius. The two characters become so close that Damon confides in Williams even in dating issues. Towards the end of the film, William’s character received a letter from the title character, who wrote, “I had to go see about a girl.” In response, William improvised the line, “He stole my line!”

Good Will Hunting
Dr. Strangelove
The absurdist piece Dr. Strangelove is all about the paranoia surrounding the Cold War. The team in the movie decided not to write a full script and allowed the cast members to improvise their own lines. They called this method a ‘retro-script.’ We can’t ever forget Dr. Strangelove’s German salute— apparently, that was all Sellers!

Dr. Strangelove
Midnight Cowboy
You may not remember this line in Midnight Cowboy, but you can be sure it was unscripted. During the shoot, a yellow cab missed the warning signs and almost ran over Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. This lead to Hoffman banging on the hood and shouting,” I’m walking here!”

Midnight Cowboy
The Dark Knight
You cannot deny the fact that the late Heath Ledger’s intensity made The Dark Knight one of the best comic book movies of all time. Although Ledger did not improvise a line, he was a legend for improvising a moment. As he was quietly sitting in jail, he witnessed Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) being congratulated for his promotion. It is here that he improvised a chilling moment by slowly clapping without changing his facial expression.

The Dark Knight
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Pardon us for saying that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 tops the other Spider-Man movies. In one scene, Emma Stone accidentally yells, “Peter!” before she remembered her line and covered her mouth at the realization. However, the director decided to keep it as it was perfect for the film.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Philadelphia Story
James Stewart surprised Cary Grant when he, unfortunately, had the hiccups during a scene. That was definitely not in the script!

Philadelphia Story
