A Gathering of Friends
I invited several pals around for a relaxing evening in search of a diversion. We enjoyed the warmth of the house while chatting and laughing. As usual, Madelyn had done a fantastic job preparing everything. My pals complimented her efforts and praised the décor. It felt normal again for a time. Before a buddy pointed out something missing from the wall, I had almost forgotten about the guy and my reservations.

With wide, interested eyes, someone questioned, “Wasn’t there a family portrait here?” I glanced at the location where the picture used to hang, feeling confused. When did it vanish? My heart was pounding, but I couldn’t remember when I’d last seen it. What was happening?
