Seeking solace
Overwhelmed, Emily turned to Daniel in the hopes of finding solace. She asked him to speak with his mother and described how Johanna’s actions were impacting her. Ever the optimist regarding his mother’s intentions, Daniel dismissed Emily’s worries. He reassured her that Johanna was utterly thrilled about the baby and was only expressing her love in her own unique manner. Emily felt even more alone after feeling that her worries were disregarded.

Emily was dejected and turned to her friend Clara for comfort. Clara, who had been watching the day unfold, lent a shoulder and a listening ear. She was blunt in her criticism of Johanna’s sabotage and chastised Emily for her inaction in the face of the continued animosity. Clara implied that perhaps it was time for Emily to speak out by saying that she shouldn’t tolerate Johanna’s behavior any longer. Uncertain about her next course of action, Emily considered Clara’s remarks.
